Huffington Post: Why does the New York Times Give Equal Time to a Hate Group

Jeffrey S. Trachtman has published a blog post The Huffington Post commenting on the New York Times’s coverage of the Supreme Court’s decision to grant review in four pending marriage equality cases. Trachtman pointed out that the Times presented contrasting quotes regarding the development from Jon Davidson, the legal director of Lambda Legal, and from Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, which it described as a conservative research and policy group. Trachtman argued that FRC is far from a mainstream organization but rather has been categorized by the Southern Poverty Law Center as an anti-gay hate group for its extreme anti-LGBT positions and practice of spreading falsehoods about LGBT people and families and the goals of the LGBT rights movement. He questioned why the Times and other media outlets continue to dignify FRC by regularly quoting its president as if he were a responsible mainstream commentator.
