Kramer Levin's representation of a group of three Uighurs, a persecuted Muslim minority group from western China who are Guantánamo detainees, was noted in a July 1 American Lawyer article about their plight. Prior to September 11, the Uighurs left China and traveled to nearby Afghanistan in search of religious freedom. In the wake of the September 11 attacks, they fled the escalating hostilities to neighboring Pakistan where they were abducted by bounty hunters, sold to the U.S. military and eventually brought to Guantánamo. In 2006 they were informed that a U.S. military tribunal had found that they were not "enemy combatants," but their detention has continued.
