In April 2012, Kramer Levin’s Pro Bono Veterans’ Team received another favorable decision from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The matter concerned a pro bono veteran client's entitlement to benefits for a partially amputated finger. In 2009, Kramer Levin’s team won its appeal of an earlier ruling, which resulted in an increase in benefits, including a retroactive lump sum and a doubling of the veterans’ monthly cash benefit at that time. Although a step in the right direction, Kramer Levin attorneys appealed the 2009 decision by arguing it still did not adequately reflect the disability benefits available under the federal veterans statutes and regulations. The current April 2012 decision resulted in the further doubling of the monthly cash benefit that had been granted in 2009, and included an additional retroactive tax free lump sum of approximately $11,000. Kramer Levin’s Pro Bono Veterans’ Team was led by Associate Mark F. Parise and included former Associates Erin Oshiro, Theodore S. Hertzberg and Clinton N. Daggan.
