Congratulations to firm Co-Chair Gary Naftalis on being given the honor of reading the 1790 letter from Moses Seixas to President George Washington, at Touro Synagogue’s annual ceremony on August 17, 2014.  This correspondence welcomed the newly elected first president of the United States, George Washington to Newport, Rhode Island. The Seixas letter and Washington's celebrated reply are generally considered to be among the foundational documents of religious liberty in the United States.  For the last 67 years, Touro Synagogue - the oldest synagogue in the United States - has held the annual reading of these two historic letters. The keynote speaker at this year's reading was Christina Hull Paxson, the President of Brown University.  Keynote speakers at past readings have included Supreme Court Justices Elena Kagan and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
