Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP announced today that Steven M. Goldman is joining the firm as a partner in the Corporate Department. Mr. Goldman has served as the State of New Jersey’s Department of Banking and Insurance Commissioner since 2006, appointed by Governor Jon S. Corzine. He left that position on July 15 to join Kramer Levin.

Mr. Goldman has recently been at the forefront of efforts to address the crises facing banks and insurance companies in New Jersey and the nation. He also has extensive experience handling corporate transactions from his many years in private practice, during which he specialized in matters such as mergers and acquisitions, private equity portfolio management, corporate counseling, and the representation of corporate boards.

“We are excited to have Steve join Kramer Levin and enhance our already extensive efforts to advise corporate, banking and insurance clients in these challenging times,” said Paul S. Pearlman, managing partner of Kramer Levin. “His leadership on these complex issues will be a great benefit to the firm and our clients.”

Mr. Goldman’s experience on banking issues includes working with the Governor’s office in New Jersey to develop responses to the mortgage foreclosure crisis. His expertise involving insurance issues includes serving as chair of the Reinsurance Task Force at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners since January 2008. In that role, he helped complete a framework for modernizing the regulation of reinsurance in the United States and between the United States and other countries.

Before taking his position with the state of New Jersey, Mr. Goldman was a senior partner at Sills, Cummis & Gross, where he worked on a wide range of corporate law matters for 22 years and served on the firm’s management committee.

“Joining Kramer Levin provides me with an exceptional platform to capitalize on my experience and knowledge in advising a range of clients throughout the country,” Mr. Goldman said. “It’s a great opportunity to work alongside some of the nation’s leading lawyers to tackle many ongoing challenges.”

Mr. Goldman serves on the Dean's Board of Advisors for The George Washington University Law School and the Operations and Finance Committee for the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. He has an LLM in taxation from New York University School of Law; a J.D., with honors, from George Washington University Law School; and an A.B. with distinction in political science from Boston University, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa, cum laude.
