Recent Court of Appeals Case Sheds Light on Scope of Champerty Doctrine

Blabey, Jr.’s article “Recent Court of Appeals Case Sheds Light on Scope of Champerty Doctrine,” appeared in the New York Law Journal’s Outside Counsel column on April 12, 2017. Following a recent New York Court of Appeals opinion on New York Judiciary Law §489, which bars certain forms of trading in litigation claims, the authors examine the current state of the champerty law in New York and a trio of recent Court of Appeals cases involving the doctrine.
