Jeffrey S. Trachtman, who along with Norman C. Simon led the Kramer Levin team in Hernandez v. Robles, the recent New York case concerning marriage rights for same-sex couples, was quoted in the New York Law Journal  regarding the New Jersey Supreme Court ruling requiring equal access to the benefits and protections of marriage.  Jeff noted that, while the majority mandated only civil unions as a remedy, the New Jersey court's unanimous recognition of an equal protection violation could impact attitudes in New York as the Legislature considers the marriage equality question left to it by the New York Court of Appeals.  He further observed that Chief Justice Deborah T. Poritz, like New York Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye, would be remembered for her forward-looking dissent calling for full marriage equality. Trachtman also was quoted in the New York Sun regarding the greater likelihood that New York courts would recognize marriages of same-sex couples, as opposed to civil unions, performed in New Jersey.
