Pro Bono Report: Using the Law to Connect With Kids
Kramer Levin attorneys participate in several mentoring programs that draw on both their legal skills and their human touch. In the most active such program, since 2000 a team of Kramer Levin lawyers, organized by Jeremy Cohen, has worked with Legal Outreach, Inc., a Harlem based organization that helps New York City public high school students develop legal skills such as persuasive writing, critical thinking, and public speaking as they prepare for college and professional careers.
In 2005, the firm welcomed four student interns from Legal Outreach who spent a week acting as Kramer Levin associates, learning about many of the firm’s practice areas, and preparing and delivering oral arguments to an esteemed panel of partner judges (Kerri Ann Law, Rick Leland, Tom Moreland, and George Snyder) in a trademark and contract dispute between a designer of fashionable denim apparel and a local distributor. In all, the Legal Outreach interns worked with over 20 Kramer Levin lawyers and staff members in their week-long advocacy simulation.
In addition, Jeremy and fellow associates Carol Archer, Jacqueline Edwards, and Kerri Folb have served as mentors for individual Legal Outreach students, helping them prepare for constitutional debates, judging those debates, and joining the students on cultural outings. Jeremy has also created an annual $2,000 scholarship prize for outstanding Legal Outreach graduates and the firm funds an additional $5,000 in scholarships given annually in memory of Marvin Frankel.
