
Pro Bono Report: Education & Technical Assistance
Cause Effective. Norm Simon and
Jodi Rosensaft helped Cause Effective, a nonprofit technical assistance provider co-founded in 1981 by
Jeff Trachtman, to revise its outdated Employee Manual and related policies. Cause Effective has helped thousands of other nonprofits raise funds and build support through special events and other techniques.
Chaverim. Chaverim, Inc.’s mission is to raise money for and implement classrooms in pre-schools that target children with special needs.
Blake Rigel represented the organization in connection with its nonprofit incorporation, application for tax-exempt status, and registration with the State of New York.
Hebrew Free Loan Society. Monica Lord and
Ilana Kahn assisted a Russian woman and loan applicant with the purchase of the assets of a spa and beauty salon in Brooklyn.
Blake Rigel provided tax advice, and
Larry Loeb assisted with real estate issues.
Greg Dolin provided translation assistance.
Orphans' Fund for University Education. The Orphans' Fund for University Education is a charitable organization that was recently formed to identify orphans and other vulnerable children age 15 and up in Africa and elsewhere in the world prevented from obtaining higher education because of a lack of resources, and to provide them with financial support for such education.
Bruce Rabb helped organize The Orphans' Fund and is currently assisting it in its application for section 501(c)(3) status.
Significant Steps. Significant Steps was a nonprofit Brooklyn-based school that provided educational and therapeutic services to infants and young children with developmental disabilities. When unanticipated costs arising from the construction of a new school building impacted Significant Steps' financial well-being, the school came to Kramer Levin for corporate turn-around and restructuring advice.

Jonathan Koevary advised Significant Steps on its restructuring and bankruptcy plans. When it became clear that Significant Steps could no longer operate without significantly altering its business model, Kramer Levin helped Significant Steps successfully transfer all of the children from its program into a neighboring facility without any disruption to the services provided to them.
Turning the Page. Turning the Page is a nonprofit corporation that links Washington, D.C. public schools, families, and the community to ensure that students receive valuable educational resources and a high-quality public education. As outside general counsel for Turning the Page, Matthew Haies reviewed and drafted agreements and advised the organization on a variety of matters, including corporate governance and employment issues.

Wadleigh Scholars Program. The Wadleigh Scholars Program identifies minority students in the 7th and 8th grades who demonstrate excellent academic skills and assists these students in pursuing scholarships to the finest preparatory schools in the United States. The Program was established in 1964 by dedicated teachers at Wadleigh Junior High School located in Harlem. To date, over 400 students have received scholarships to preparatory schools around the country and have gone on to attend colleges and universities. Kramer Levin provides general corporate representation for the Program. The representation entails maintaining the Program's corporate status, reviewing agreements with third party vendors that provide services to the Program, and reviewing the Program's annual tax filing with the New York State Attorney General’s Charities Bureau. In addition,
Christopher Auguste, an alumnus of the Program, tutors and mentors scholars who are seeking admission to preparatory schools.
