
Pro Bono Report: Poverty & Homelessness
Broadway Housing Communities. Broadway Housing Communities is a not-for-profit developer of supported housing that serves low-income and homeless families and individuals. BHC's most recent development was the Dorothy Day Apartments located at 583 Riverside Drive which provided 70 apartments as well as a Head Start and afterschool program for its residents and neighborhood children. BHC has received a major funding commitment and is now seeking a site to develop supportive housing for families, a school, and a possible children's museum.
Jonathan Canter and
Valerie Campbell are providing real estate and zoning advice with respect to BHC's identified sites.
Coalition for the Homeless. Kramer Levin assisted the Coalition for the Homeless, a leading organization combating homelessness in New York, in a variety of matters.
Michael Korotkin and Michael Jaffe represented the Coalition in connection with a lease in Albany, as well as a lease of its space at 129 Fulton Street. Patricia Ronan, Shoshana Altschuler, and
Carmel Gabbay helped the Coalition with a variety of additional matters, including the adoption of policies and procedures related to its programs.
Erin Walter coordinated legal services at fair hearings for homeless men and women evicted from homeless shelters allegedly for not following rules. Erin also served as a mentor in First Step, the Coalition’s back-to-work mentoring program.
Common Ground Community. Common Ground Community is a nonprofit organization that develops and manages buildings for use as low-income housing for previously homeless and low-income adults and provides an array of social and psychiatric services for the residents. As part of its job placement and training programs, Common Ground operates a number of businesses designed to prepare the formerly homeless for private sector employment.
Jonathan Fried and Owen Glist provided legal advice on landlord-tenant issues in connection with the renovation of the Andrews Hotel for the First Step Housing Program, which provides shelter for homeless men.
Paul Selver and
Valerie Campbell worked with
Geoff Potter and advised on land use issues that could constrain the re-use of the Windemere Apartments, a designated New York City landmark.
Island Harvest. Kevin Leblang provides general legal advice, focusing primarily on personnel and employment law counseling, for Island Harvest, a food rescue organization on Long Island.
Kids in Distressed Situations. Kids in Distressed Situations is a nonprofit organization founded over 10 years ago originally to assist victims of famine in Africa. Its mission has expanded to include assistance to children in poverty, in shelters, or struck by disaster. K.I.D.S. served over 3 million children in 2005, 85% of them in the United States and 15% abroad.
Tom Balliett and
Adam Busch provided legal advice to K.I.D.S. on best practices in not-for-profit governance and also to the K.I.D.S. audit committee.
Erica Klein and
Heather Chase assisted in the prosecution of a trademark application and provided legal advice regarding trademark issues.
