Pro Bono Report: Civil & Human Rights

A Better World Fund. A Better World Fund is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that gives grants to deserving charities doing vital work internationally and in the United States in the areas of peace, hunger, health, human rights, ecology, education, and economic development. Its grant recipients include, among many others, Doctors Without Borders USA, Freedom from Hunger, Human Rights Watch, International Campaign to Ban Landmines, Medical Education for South African Blacks, Seeds of Peace, Teach for America, and Trees for Life. In 2007, Ted Mlynar, Erica Klein, and Geoff Hu assisted the organization in protecting its trademark “A Better World Fund” against use by an unrelated third party.

FilmAid International. FilmAid International is a Hollywood-oriented charitable organization created to bring films to refugee camps in Europe, Africa, and elsewhere, to create public information videos, teacher instruction videos, and public service announcements for refugee populations, and to create a platform for other organizations seeking to reach out to refugees to provide needed services. Bruce Rabb, a Director and the Corporate Secretary of FilmAid, assisted the client in the negotiation of several agreements relating to the client’s work in African refugee camps and with displaced children in New Orleans, guided the organization in the development of its corporate governance policies, and advised the client with respect to the legal aspects of its relationship with its UK affiliate. Scott Schneider assisted FilmAid in a settlement with its current landlord that enabled FilmAid to move to a significantly better workspace at very favorable terms and in negotiating the new lease, and continues to provide advice and assistance on lease-related matters.

Human Rights Watch. Human Rights Watch is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization dedicated to the protection of human rights worldwide. Bruce Rabb provided ongoing legal assistance to the organization’s Board and Board committees on governance and other legal matters. He also is a Director Emeritus and the corporate secretary of the organization, and serves as Co-Chair of the LGBT Advisory Committee and a Vice Chair of the Middle East North Africa Advisory Committee.

National Center for Law and Social Justice. NCLEJ, formerly called the Welfare Law Center, is a nonprofit organization that promotes economic justice, fairness, and opportunity for those in need, secures systemic reform in the delivery of income support and related human services, and seeks to safeguard the legal and constitutional rights of the disadvantaged. Bruce Rabb serves on the Board and provides advice and guidance on corporate governance matters.

National Economic and Social Rights Initiative. NESRI is a nonprofit organization that seeks to promote the recognition and use of economic and social human rights in the United States. Bruce Rabb serves on the Board and provides advice and guidance on corporate governance matters.

Nivasa Foundation. Nivasa Foundation assists former victims of enslavement in Sri Lanka by supporting their rehabilitation needs and those of their families, and produces educational resources and grassroots advocacy campaigns regarding human trafficking in Sri Lanka and around the world. Anna Krasnostein and John Bessonette provide general corporate advice.

Seeds of Peace. Seeds of Peace is a nonprofit, non-political organization that helps teenagers from regions of conflict learn the skills of making peace. Ashley Roberts and Erica Klein assisted Seeds of Peace on possibly filing applications to register its trademark in various jurisdictions abroad.
