Pro Bono Report: Using the Law to Connect With Kids

Since 2001, more than twenty Kramer Levin lawyers, originally mobilized by associate Ian Sandler and currently led by Parthena Psyllos, have participated in the High School Law Teaching and Advocacy Program organized by the Urban Academy.  In this program, our lawyers are trained to teach public high school classes in constitutional and criminal law.  Our lawyers plan and conduct lessons, create and grade homework, and conduct tests and final examinations, which consist of court simulations held at the Firm with other lawyers serving as volunteer judges.  Our attorneys have found it exceptionally rewarding to interact with the students and to assist them in strengthening their writing, public speaking, and advocacy skills, and even help them with college and career planning.  In 2004, the team of lawyers included Albert Chen, Eric Cohen, Jennifer DespinsSavvas DiacosavvasAaron FrankelChristiaan Johnson-GreenJennifer Haber, Michelle Lung, Natan HamermanGrace O’HanlonParthena PsyllosSteven SparlingMichael Yap , and Stacie Yates.

Another team of associates, organized by Jeremy Cohen, has participated in the Legal Outreach program, based in Harlem, which similarly uses law to help high school students develop creative, analytical, and public speaking skills. Jeremy and fellow associates Mary AversanoRachel Lin, and Seth Weinberg have served as judges in constitutional debates and as individual mentors, helping students prepare for the formal debates and joining them on cultural outings.  In addition to organizing Kramer Levin’s participation in Legal Outreach, Jeremy has created an annual $1,000 scholarship prize for an outstanding Legal Outreach graduate (and the Firm funds several additional scholarships each year).  In 2005, for the first time, the firm also hosted Legal Outreach summer interns. More than 20 lawyers, summer associates, and staff members participated in a week-long legal advocacy simulation and other activities with our four interns.
