Pro Bono Report: Religious & Community
American Friends of Am Yisrael Echad/Jewish Youth United. American Friends of Am Yisrael Echad/Jewish Youth United promotes and develops programs aimed at building understanding and bridging gaps between secular and religious Jews. Howard Spilko, Ben Bernstein , and then-summer associate Marc Melzer represented the organization in connection with its nonprofit incorporation and application to obtain tax-exempt status.
Congregation of Kehilath Jeshurun. Jonathan Wagner represents Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun, one of the leading Modern Orthodox congregations in Manhattan, in litigation and other matters.
Congregation Ohab Zedek. Michael Mayerfeld assists the seven hundred member Congregation Ohab Zedek with various employment and governance-related matters.
Pathway of Hope Ministry. Pathway of Hope Ministry, Inc. is a nonprofit religious organization that operates a television ministry in New York City. Maxroy Mitchell assisted Pathway of Hope in its incorporation and application for tax-exempt status, as well as assisting with other legal filings, equipment leases, site usage arrangements, and negotiations with various television stations.
Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding. The Tanenbaum Center for Interreligious Understanding works to prevent verbal and physical violence perpetrated in the name of religion and seeks to make religion a source of dialogue and reconciliation rather than division. Bob Heller is Secretary of the Center and a member of its Board and provides corporate counsel or supervision on a variety of legal issues. Izabel McDonald developed the Center’s employee handbook and assists the Center with employment issues. Susan Klein represented the Center in the expansion of its leased office space. Kevin Moss and Richard Moss acted for the Center in developing contracts to protect its intellectual property rights in its Building Blocks for Democracy program, which teaches children mutual respect for their differing religious heritages. They also assisted in protecting the Center’s rights in its religious diversity in the workplace program, which has been adopted by several leading firms in the United States. Finally, Sharon Makower assisted the Center in obtaining a program grant from New York Empire State Development Corporation to support the Building Blocks program, which is being piloted in several New York schools.
Union for Reform Judaism. The Union for Reform Judaism (formerly the Union of American Hebrew Congregations) represents nearly 920 Reform Jewish congregations in North America, with over 1.5 million members. The URJ provides leadership, vision, and programmatic resources to Reform congregations and their members. Together with the Central Conference of American Rabbis, which represents over 1,700 Reform rabbis, the URJ works to apply the insights of Jewish tradition to major societal concerns and acts to mobilize the American Jewish community on legislative and social policy matters through the Commission on Social Action and its Religious Action Center based in Washington, D.C. Bob Heller, Chair of the URJ and former Chair of the Commission on Social Action, counsels the URJ on internal governance, employment, and similar legal issues, and assists on amicus briefs and other public policy matters. Recently, Larry Loeb advised the URJ with respect to the lease of a portion of its office condominium space in Manhattan to a third party. In addition, Bob has served as a lay adviser — providing both legal and general policy counsel — to the CCAR committee charged with reviewing and revising its Ethics Guidelines and Procedures for resolving ethics complaints involving rabbis.
Westside Community Center. The Jewish Community Center of Manhattan is a nonprofit organization that serves the needs of the local Jewish Community. In addition to a variety of adult education classes in the arts and Jewish culture, the JCC offers an array of family programs and workshops. Ira Teicher, with guidance from Michael Paul Korotkin and Peter Kolevzon , recently represented the JCC in connection with a lease to a local vender for catering and café needs at its West Side facility.
