• Dani R. James represents executives, directors and officers, and other individuals, as well as companies, in sensitive, complicated and often high-profile criminal and regulatory trials, hearings, investigations and other proceedings conducted by federal and state agencies, including the U.S. Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, among other agencies.     From 1999 to 2003, Dani served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Southern District of New York, representing the United States as lead counsel in a wide variety of federal criminal cases involving securities fraud, bank fraud, money laundering, international narcotics trafficking, racketeering and violent offenses, as well as appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Prior to joining the firm in 2007, Dani served as assistant visiting professor at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, where she taught courses on criminal law and conducted extensive research on federal sentencing issues.

    • Represents the product manager for an Alternative Trading System in investigations by the New York Attorney General and the SEC.

    • Represents a former managing director of an investment bank in an SEC investigation and civil litigation relating to a failed CDO (collateralized debt obligation).

    • Represents a former senior managing director of an investment bank in regulatory and criminal investigations and civil litigation relating to mortgage-backed securities.

    • Represented a managing director of a broker-dealer in an investigation of alleged mini-manipulation by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority and the Chicago Board Options Exchange, in which, following the issuance of a Wells notice, Ms. James successfully persuaded CBOE not to pursue an enforcement action against her client.

    • Represented a payment processor in a criminal action brought by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York relating to alleged unlawful Internet gambling.

    • Conducted an internal investigation on behalf of the board of directors of the U.S. division of a multinational bank into claims of managerial misconduct and unlawful trading activity.

    • Represented the city of New York in the investigation by the New York County District Attorney of a fatal fire at the Deutsche Bank building.

    • Represented a real estate development firm in connection with a probe by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York into alleged bribery of public officials.
