Kramer Levin obtained asylum for a client from Russia who feared persecution because he is a transgender man. Violence against LGBT individuals in Russia is pervasive and often sanctioned by police and government officials. In 2013, Russia codified a law prohibiting the promotion of “non-traditional” relationships, which the New York Times reported gives broad latitude to Russian police in the ongoing persecution of homosexuals. The Kramer Levin team, Intellectual Property associate Austin Manes and supervising partner Aaron Frankel, successfully demonstrated to the asylum officer that our client and his wife have a well-founded fear that the Russian government would persecute them if they returned to Russia. The client was referred to Kramer Levin by longtime pro bono partner Immigration Equality.
