Jean-Pierre Mattout’s practice primarily focuses on advice and litigation on national and international banking and financial transactions, mergers and acquisitions, company law and corporate governance issues.

He has been involved in all types of banking and financial transactions, national and international. As former General Counsel of the Paribas Group, a position held for more than ten years, he participated directly in the formulation and implementation of many strategic operations, including large mergers and acquisitions. From 2002 until 2004, he was the General Counsel of the France Telecom Group.

Based upon his experience as the chief legal officer of an international bank and of one of Europe’s largest business corporations, he has a wealth of knowledge in corporate governance issues. He chaired the legal committee of the ANSA during seven years, until 2012.

Admitted to the Paris Bar. He is honorary Chairman of the French Banking Committee of the ICC, as well as honorary Chairman of the European Association for Banking & Financial Law. He was an associated teacher at the Law Universities of Paris until 2015.

Jean-Pierre Mattout is ranked as indispensable in stock market litigation and listed transactions, excellent in Regulatory, with a highly regarded practice (forte notoriété) in Acquisition finance, Bond issuances and Financial services (regulatory & litigation) and with a recognised practice (pratique réputée) in M&A as well as in Securitization and structured finance (Décideurs Stratégie Finance Droit 2016-2017).

He is also quoted in Litigation with a 5* band (max 5*) in Regulatory and in Financial Litigation, and in the 2* band (max 5*) in White-collar crime and securities-law sanctions proceedings, rankings released by Option Droit & Affaires for 2014-2015, as well in the 2* band (max 5*) in the Debt Restructuring by Option Droit & Affaires (2016).

He is also ranked by Legal 500 EMEA and Paris 2015 in Banking and Finance: Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP has ‘very strong expertise in the banking field, especially for litigation’. Jean-Pierre Mattout co-heads the ten-lawyer team, drawing on its in-depth knowledge of the banking industry, which assists major financial institutions such as Crédit Agricole, BNP Paribas, and Société Générale, as well as insurers and asset managers. The practice is involved in various structured finance and toxic loan disputes. The team was also assigned to handle FinTech matters in connexion with the use and development of new technologies applied to the banking industry. Gilles Kolifrath’s recent arrival strengthened the team; as well as in Commercial Litigation: Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP ‘benefits from a high level experts team in commercial litigation’. The banking team, led by Jean-Pierre Mattout and Hubert de Vauplane, both former general counsels of large French banks, has a strong profile for asset management companies and exotic banking matters. In 2014, Kramer Levin continues to uphold a good reputation for financial regulatory and financial litigation.
