Kramer Levin obtained a grant of asylum for a gay man from Grenada suffering from AIDS. Our client's life was repeatedly threatened by the police and others due to his sexual orientation. The matter was complicated by the fact that our client applied for asylum more than one year after his arrival in the United States, which usually results in a loss of eligibility. The Kramer Levin team filed an affirmative asylum application and prepared extensive briefing, successfully arguing that the client's recent AIDS diagnosis was a changed circumstance sufficient to overcome the one year deadline based on the increased likelihood of persecution if he returned to Grenada. Associate Leslie Nguyen and former associates Matthew Abbot and Carmel Gabbay Legault worked on the matter which was referred to the firm by longtime pro bono partner Immigration Equality.
